Is painting my house exterior worth it?

Yes, regularly painting the exterior of your house is worth it and will save you money.

A fresh coat of paint can completely transform a home, especially if your old paint is worn and faded. Exterior paint also protects the outdoor surfaces of your home from damage, deterioration, and water leaks caused by the weather. For savvy homeowners, exterior painting is a necessary maintenance task performed every 3–8 years.

Minor Home Exterior Repairs

Waiting too long between exterior paint jobs leads to expensive repairs including rotted wood and water intrusion. For example, the average cost to replace rotted wood siding or trim is $1,800 if you are lucky. Combined with the additional labor needed to scrape, sand, prime, caulk, and repair peeling paint, it can get expensive. Fortunately, all of this is prevented by repainting the exterior every few years.

Major Repair Costs

In the worst cases, exterior damage can lead to structural failures. Major exterior repairs or structural damages can range from $10,000 to $60,000 for extensive replacement work. Whether you DIY or hire, maintaining exterior surfaces regularly is a small price to avoid major headaches down the line.

In-House Crews. One Local Location.

No subcontractors. Every painter is a trained, background-checked Helpful Hand employee. We manage quality, schedule, and safety from our single Upstate SC headquarters so you get consistent results on every project.

Licensed & Insured

We carry extensive liability insurance and workers’ compensation coverage to protect you and your home in all cases. We’re also EPA lead-safe certified and can safely handle historic projects when required.

Our Guarantee

Your outdoor painting job includes a 30-day touch-up guarantee and a 3-year workmanship warranty. We take pride in clean sites, crisp lines, and durable finishes.

What paint do you use?

Paint quality drives longevity. We typically specify Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore exterior systems. SuperPaint is a solid entry level; upgrading to Duration or Emerald adds years of protection. Benjamin Moore’s Aura is also an excellent premium option.

Latex vs. Oil

Modern acrylic latex exteriors breathe properly and are just as durable as oil in most cases. We’ll only use oil-based primers where they make sense (e.g., knot sealing) to prevent bleed-through.

Who picks colors?

We don’t offer color consultations. You (or your designer) choose the colors; we handle the prep and professional application. We can share basic best-practice guidance (e.g., flat/satin for siding, semi-gloss for trim, gloss/semi-gloss for front doors), but the final selection is yours.

Our Exterior Painting Process

  1. Confirm scope, access, and your chosen colors.
  2. Pressure wash exterior surfaces.
  3. Mask/tape as needed (roof edges, windows, lights).
  4. Cover plants, hardscape, and outdoor items.
  5. Perform repairs: scraping, sanding, priming, caulking, wood patch/replacement.
  6. Apply first coat of primer/paint/stain.
  7. Apply second coat for full coverage and protection.
  8. Jobsite cleanup & responsible paint can disposal.
  9. Final walkthrough with you & touch-ups as needed.
